Fund

The inspiration for the Independence Equity Fund stems from observations made by its founding partners while building, advising and investing in early-stage companies during the last decade. These observations include the growing demand for and depletion of natural resources; the ability of entrepreneurs to solve such problems through innovation; and the inefficiency of capital markets in financing early-stage technologies, especially within the Fund’s targeted investment theme (see criteria). The Fund seeks to capitalize on these observations by providing entrepreneurs with capital to commercialize their innovations and create long-term capital appreciation.

Independence Equity I, LP is an early-stage venture capital fund focused on technologies that improve resource utilization.

Following is a high-level overview of the Fund’s investment criteria:

Stage: Early-stage, commercial-ready technologies. The Fund seeks companies that have an initial customer base or validation of the technologies through customer trials.

Sector: “Resource utilization” technologies reduce input costs such as raw materials, energy and labor, improve yield in production processes, or decrease waste or scrap. The fund’s interests comprise sectors such as material science, industrial innovation, and clean technologies (“cleantech”).

Geography: National, with a particular interest in companies located in regions currently underserved by venture capital.

Investment Size: The fund will initially invest between $500K and $1MM with the objective of holding capital in reserve for follow-on investments.

Co-Investment: The fund seeks to co-invest alongside angels, angel groups and other venture capital funds.
